ABSTRACT This paper reports on the theoretical and empirical development, statistical validation, and application of an instrument measuring the strength of an individual's entrepreneurial drive: the drive to create and grow a venture. The implications of the findings are more important than the instrument itself as they demonstrate that entrepreneurial drive can explain differences in the entrepreneurial behavior of individuals. The study shows that entrepreneurial drive is normally distributed and that it does discriminate between entrepreneurs managing high growth and low growth firms. Finally, the findings go to the heart of the definitional debate and explain that the entrepreneur does indeed affect new venture performance: thereby putting the "E" back in the new venture performance model.
